Total profit for a month can hide what is going on. Profit per bird shows whether each batch actually pays.
The formula
Profit per bird = (money from sales − all costs for the batch) ÷ number of birds sold.
What counts as a cost
- Chicks or day-old birds.
- Feed, which is usually the largest cost.
- Medicine and vaccines.
- Labour, water, power and transport.
- Losses from birds that died.
An example
A batch of 1,000 birds brings in ₦4,500,000 from sales. Total costs are ₦3,900,000. Profit is ₦600,000, so profit per bird is ₦600 across 1,000 birds.
Work it out for each batch and compare. Poultrack keeps the costs and sales for a batch together, so the number is ready when the batch ends.
