How to work out your feed conversion ratio without a spreadsheet

By the Poultrack team

Feed conversion ratio, or FCR, tells you how much feed it takes to grow one kilogram of bird. The lower the number, the better.

The formula

FCR = total feed given ÷ total weight gained.

Say a batch of 1,000 broilers ate 4,200 kg of feed and the flock gained 2,300 kg in weight. Your FCR is 4,200 ÷ 2,300, which is about 1.83.

What you need to record

  • Feed given each day, in kilograms or bags (and the weight of a bag).
  • The number of birds and their average weight at the start.
  • A weight check at the end, or at regular points through the cycle.

How to use the number

Compare each batch with the last one. If FCR climbs while the feed brand and the weather stay about the same, look at wastage, spilled feed and whether birds are sick. Poultrack works this out for you from your daily records.
